“K U M A R I” Project Nepal, March-October 2006

In 2005, after completing a successful humanitarian mission in Cambodia to support AIDS affected orphans and children, in 2006 our association visited Nepal to offer help and support to young girls victims of violence. The NGO “Asia Watch” has been investigating the problem for several years and reports that over 50,000 Nepali girls have been abducted, sold and forced into prostitution. Every year 5 to 7,000 women and children are sold to sex traffickers in India and other Asian countries. In Nepal, these tragic and deplorable conditions are aggravated by the practice of early marriage as the average age for marriage is 17. However, 7% of Nepali girls are forced to marry before age 10 and 40% before age 15.

Through the Kumari project we took a group of clowns coming from all over the world – Argentina, Cambodia, Japan, Italy, the Netherlands, USA – to hospitals, orphanages, hospices and other healthcare/social facilities for women victims of violence. Thanks to the support of our sponsors, the project will provide vocational training activities as well as schooling and education (for ten years) to ten or more Dalit girls in Katmandu.

The "Kumari" project in Nepal will continue with other activities in the coming years.
